Detailed information about this program

In support of NERC’s mission, the System Operator Certification Program’s promotes reliability of the North American bulk power system (BPS) by ensuring that employers have a workforce of system operators that meet minimum qualifications. NERC monitors system operators to ensure they maintain their required credentials to work in system control centers across North America. NERC’s system operator certification exam tests specific knowledge of job skills and Reliability Standards. It also prepares operators to handle the BPS during normal and emergency operations. Certification is maintained by completing NERC‐approved Credential Maintenance Program courses and activities. System operators maintain their certifications by completing NERC‐approved Credential Maintenance Program courses and activities, which can be monitored using the System Operator Certification and Credential Maintenance Database (SOCCED). Exams The System Operator Certification exam ensures that system operators meet minimum qualifications by demonstrating that they have attained sufficient knowledge relating to NERC Reliability Standards as well as the basic principles of bulk power system operations. After operators obtain their initial certifications, they can maintain their credentials by meeting the continuing education requirements every three years. Process The Exam Working Group (EWG Scope) consists of subject matter experts and conducts job analysis surveys of industry certified operators, which provides the content outline for the four exams and serves as the framework to associate tasks with exam questions. Credential Maintenance Program Our Credential Maintenance Program ensures the availability of high-quality learning activities within the industry that furthers the knowledge and skills of credential holders beyond initial certification. The program approves continuing education providers that meet established NERC guidelines and requirements for training development and delivery.
